Now that we are in the middle of August and we can enjoy our vacations, we have more time to have fun and entertain ourselves with those series that we have been putting off due to our work and family commitments throughout the year.
Summer is a time of change; Even if it's just for a few days, everyone can get away from their routines and, apart from visits to the beach and swimming pools, we like to give ourselves those tributes that introduce us to great audiovisual stories, whether in some remote place, in a small town. on the beach, or even in our own house. We tell you what they are and where to watch the best series this holiday.
What are the platforms where you can find the best series?
Streaming is, basically, the technology that allows us to view an audio or video file without previously downloading it to any of our digital devices. But, let's see which are the best platforms to enjoy great television series, especially in the summer season.
The great streaming giant, Netflix, is the rival to beat. Its universe of movies and series for all tastes also includes original content, and has established itself as the most popular platform worldwide. This summer, Spanish fiction series are triumphing on the American platform, such as A perfect story; of true crime, as The last hours of Mario Biondo; or other more summery, adolescent and romantic ones, like the British Heartstopper.
For its part, another of the essential platforms is Amazon Prime Video which, apart from those that make headlines and get Funko dolls, offers hidden gems that we should not miss. Some of the most notable are Fleabag (2016); The family (2021), a splendid documentary about perhaps the best generation of Spanish basketball; either This is Us (2016), a mix of drama and comedy about several people who were born on the same day.
We could complete the list of the best platforms with HBO Max Spain, which offers us great products such as The Last of Us (2023), which ends modern civilization; the already mythical Chernobyl (2019) or Succession (2018), which follows the dysfunctional family of tycoon Logan Roy and his four children. But we also have to mention other highlights such as SkyShowTime, Disney+, Movistar+ either Filmin.
The best series to enjoy on vacation
Some websites and specialized media offer us a selection of the best series in history, for those moments when we can't decide on any, and that we can enjoy this summer. Among them, we always find some of the most mythical, such as The Sopranos (1999); the unforgettable police drama set in Baltimore, The Wire (2002); classics like Twin Peaks (1990) by the eclectic David Lynch; or some more summery ones like The Simpson (1989); Lost (2004); or the comedy that is repeated over and over again on different television channels, and that always surprises for the better, big Bang (2007), the most beloved and comical scientists of the 21st century. Without forgetting other great series that have achieved success in recent years, such as Game of Thrones (2011) or Breaking Bad (2008).
What is the best series in history?
When we think of the “best series in history”, it is likely that what is inevitable will arise: it is very difficult to agree. The debate is open, but in order to determine what it could be, we have taken the average scores from several portals specialized in film criticism, such as IMDb, Filmaffinity, Rotten Tomatoes, Metacritic and some more. Thus, we have come to the conclusion that the best series in history is none other than Breaking Bad (2008).
This would be followed by others, some already mentioned, such as Game of Thrones, Chernobyl, The Sopranos, Band of Brothers either TheWire. It should be noted that through our analysis, such famous series that have revolutionized the networks as lost either The Manalorian They are not even among the top 30. We can stand out sherlock in 9th place Twin Peaks in 44.
Spanish series that you should not miss
Using a similar method, we have found several Spanish series highly valued by critics and the public, which we could determine as the best Spanish series in history. These series, which we consider to be the best rated and not the most viewed, reveal surprises such as the True Crime documentaries of Crimes, by Carles Porta (2020). At number two we find the series created by Rodrigo Sorogoyen, Riot gear (2020). And in the first positions we find, in the same way, the miniseries Homeland (2020), by Aitor Gabilondo or Farina (2018).
But if we analyze the series most watched by Spaniards, we find the great comedy classics of our country. In this order, There is no one living here (2003); Aida (2005); 7 lives (1999) and Nui Girl (2007), which baby boomers and Millennials continue to enjoy.
Series to enjoy with the family during the holidays
Summer is also one of those special times when we enjoy family time more, although if there are small children or children of different ages in our house, it can be more complicated to bring them all together. Therefore, we recommend some series that are perfect for them and also for us, adults.
One of these examples is the wonderful Stranger Things, one of the best Netflix series, which brings together impressive horror scenes, but at the same time memorable vitality, a great cast and Spielberg's purest eighties style. On the other hand, if we are looking to have a laugh, we should not miss Modern Family, one of the best comedies of the 21st century and the most representative family series on current television. We have it on Disney+ and it tells the daily life of three families in the purest style Friends.
On Netflix we also find great animation proposals such as Trollhunters: Tales of Arcadia, also an outstanding series in its genre, thanks to its way of capturing the passion of Guillermo del Toro, its creator, for monsters in a youthful and accessible way for the whole family. Likewise, we recommend, on the same platform, Lemony Snicket: A Series of Unfortunate Events, based on a saga of entertaining and educational children's novels and, if we go by the latest film version from 2004, this will also be a very interesting adaptation.
The best series about music and musicals
If you are like us, a lover of music and good sound, you will also be interested in finding series about music and musicals, the kind that excite you with their stories and soundtracks. On the aforementioned platforms we can find fictions and documentaries about our favorite bands or proposals that are impregnated with the universe of melodies and harmony; or just spend time enjoying.
One of our favorites can be found on Netflix, with the title Song Exploder, which is divided into two volumes, of four episodes each, in which the story is told behind the creative curtain of some songs that have achieved unprecedented success. Between them, Losing my religion, from REM; 3 hours drive, by Alicia Keys or When you are youngby The Killers. Thus, it offers us to know the main inspirations, the process of creating the songs and endless details about the creation of these hits and their composers.
If we have Disney+, we like Pixar and jazz, we can enjoy wonderful moments visiting Soul, an animated film tells the story of a music teacher, Joe Gardner, passionate about jazz and piano. This film, which is among our favorite series, provides a very important reflection on what our mission is and why we are in this life. It's worth checking out, as it's considered one of Pixar's best films.
Continuing with the series, we find Vinyl, a ten-episode proposal created by geniuses like Martin Scorsese, Rich Cohen, Mick Jagger and Terence Winter. The story revolves around Bobby Cannavale, a music producer who wants to build a career in the New York music scene during the 1970s. The HBO production also has an incredible soundtrack to hear every note from beginning to end. Finally, in this article we also propose Daisy Jones and the Six, a series based on the novel of the same name by Taylor Jenkins Reid, about a rock band in the 1970s.
