What is the origin of the Symphony Orchestra?
The Roman and Ottoman empires were the two main founders, catalysts and forgers of the centers of musical production. The word “orchestra” is of Greek origin and means “place of dance.” By definition, an orchestra is a group of instruments and the musicians who play them. Orchestration is the art of writing scores so that they can be transformed into music by orchestras.
The orchestra understood as a place of dance was a circular space. The choirs danced, sang and interacted with the actors on stage. The oldest orchestras were made of compacted earth, although in the classical period some orchestras began to be paved with marble or other materials. Often, in the center there was an altar on which the scenery was carried out by the actors and dancers.
As a general rule, A symphony orchestra is made up of approximately 80 musicians in total., distributed proportionally according to the category of each of the instruments that make up the symphonic band.
The word symphony comes from the Latin symphonia. This concept came to our language as a set of musical instruments and/or voices that sound simultaneously and in an appropriate manner.

What are the types of instruments that are part of the symphony orchestra
Each symphony orchestra has different instruments that are arranged in space in a certain way depending on their sound power. The string instruments are placed in front, from highest to lowest. Behind them are placed the wind instruments, first wood and then metal. And finally the percussion instruments and the piano are placed.
The wind instruments of the symphony orchestra They are classified into two categories:
– Woodwind: 1 piccolo, 2 flutes, 2 oboes, 1 English horn, 2 clarinets and 2 bassoons. A bass clarinet and a contrabassoon or saxophone may also be included.
– Brass: 2 to 5 trumpets, 2 to 6 horns, 2 to 3 trombones, 1-2 bass trombones. You can also include, if necessary, a tuba.
string instruments They are the ones that occupy most of the symphony orchestra. It can include 16 to 30 violins, 8 to 12 violas, 8 to 12 cellos, 5 to 8 double basses, as well as an occasional harp or piano.
The percussion instruments are at the choice of the orchestra director, since they depend on the work to be performed, so they may or may not be necessary. If necessary, countless percussion instruments can be included: boxes, timpani, marimbas, plates, metallophones, tubular bells, rattles, maracas...
